Soaking in Serenity
A Japanese
inspired garden bathroom setting can be one of
the most relaxing and enjoyable.
Imagine a tub and garden combination!
Architect Hugh Kennedy had clients who had lived
in Japan for several years and were used to deep
soaking tubs surrounded by gardens. They wanted
their tub to be the focus of the bathroom, big
enough for two people to soak in water up to
their chins and look out at the garden.
Kennedy set about to create this
Japanese-inspired haven. The biggest challenge
was the tub. It had to be deep enough for the
purpose but allow for overflow and low enough
for a garden view. One of his goals was to keep
the tub in proportion so that it wouldn’t
overwhelm the bathroom.
His solution was to make the tub six inches
higher than the floor of the adjoining shower
and connect the tub and shower with a slanting
platform three feet wide by an inch deep. The
platform could serve as a spillway if necessary.
Large picture windows in the bathroom focus on
the garden, which is surrounded by carefully
positioned shrubs and trees. In this
Japanese-inspired design, you can relax in the
tub and feel like you’re outside.
