Choosing Your New Lavatory

A lavatory can be the decorative focal point of the bathroom.

Lavatories are available in many sizes, shapes, and colors. A lavatory can be the decorative focal point of the bathroom. You can choose a freestanding pedestal, a wall-mounted design, or a vanity-installed lavatory.

If you decide on a lavatory installed in a vanity, you have a variety of choices:

  1. Integral. The lavatory and countertop comprise a single unit.

  2. Self-rimming. The rim of the lavatory extends an inch or so over the top of the counter.

  3. Flush-mounted. A metal ring is fitted into the gap between the lavatory and the counter. This is the least expensive design, but it can be difficult to keep clean.

  4. Above-counter. The lavatory bowl is set on top of the counter and measures about 3 inches high.

  5. Under-mount. The lavatory is attached to the countertop from beneath, which creates a smooth visual line and eliminates seams that could collect grime.
