Bathroom Lighting
In your bathroom remodeling plan, be sure
to include overall illumination and strategic
task lighting for grooming activities.
Incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes cast a
warm white glow and flatter the complexion best.
In small bath and powder rooms, a central
ceiling light, or fixtures flanking the mirror,
provide sufficient overall lighting. Medium- to
large-size bathrooms need additional fixtures in
the shower, tub, and toilet areas.
In the toilet area, a 60- to 75-watt
incandescent light or a 30- to 40-watt
fluorescent tube are good choices. The tub and
shower areas require about 60 watts of
incandescent illumination. For use in wet areas,
most building codes require an enclosed light
fixture that is vapor proof. Light fixtures over
the tub area should be positioned to avoid glare
in your eyes when you're relaxing and soaking in
the tub.
Dimmer switches can be installed on fixtures
with incandescent or fluorescent bulbs to set
the mood for relaxing soaks. You can also dim
the lights for those late-night trips to the
bathroom.
Good task lighting is critical in the grooming
center to prevent shadows on the face. Arrange
the fixtures to aim the light from above and
both sides. For a small mirror, position a 100-
to 120-watt light with the front edge of the
sink. For side lighting, use wall fixtures or
pendants on both sides of the mirror with 75- to
120-watt bulbs. If you choose a fluorescent
fixture, use a ceiling fixture of 32 to 54 watts
and sidelights of 20 watts.
Sidelights are not effective if the mirror is
wider than 36 inches. Instead, use recessed
ceiling fixtures or install a multiple-bulb
fixture above the mirror.
Windows
A window adds cheer and radiance to the bathroom
and provides you with a view. If clear glass
would compromise your privacy, however, you can
always select frosted, etched, or stained-glass
panes. Another option is to replace the panes
with glass block or acrylic panels.
If you don’t have a window and don’t want to
have one made, you can opt for a skylight.
