Upgrading Your Toilets

A standard toilet consists of two pieces with a round bowl and a gravity-fed flushing mechanism and costs less than $100 at home improvement stores.

Upgrading your toilet can actually make a huge difference in how your bathroom looks and feels. Not only are the newer toilets much more water friendly you can get them in many styles and designs.

Older toilets use 3.5 to 5 gallons of water per flush. Today, Federal law prohibits the manufacture of toilets using more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Some of the newer water-conserving toilets don't flush as completely as the older models, and toilets that operate only by gravity may need to be flushed twice. Some toilets come with a pressure-assisted flushing mechanism. These are relatively effective but they cost twice as much as the gravity-operated model and are very noisy in comparison.

Shopping for a toilet may not sound glamorous, but different styles are available. You can get one- or two-piece designs with bowls that are round or elongated. A standard toilet consists of two pieces with a round bowl and a gravity-fed flushing mechanism and costs less than $100 at home improvement stores. A sophisticated one-piece, or low profile, model with a pressurized flushing mechanism costs about $600. Decorator-style toilets go for $1,300 and up.
